Trujillo

It was founded in 1534 by Diego de Almagro under the name of "Villa Trujillo" in honour of Francisco Pizarro's birthplace. On 23 November 1537, King Charles I of Spain gave it the rank of 'city' and the coat of arms that remains a symbol for the city.Trujillo is also known as the "Ciudad de la Eterna Primavera"

During the XVIII century, due to the frequent pirat attacks, they built walls that are still visible. In 1619, an earthquake destroyed the city. Years later, in 1624, a new period surge started with the rebuildings of palaces and the opening of the seminary and the school of the Jesuits.

Until mid XX Century, the wealth of this town was given in the agricultural production and its export, and from then on it began the industrialization and the trade; prevailing the agricultural production of the sugar cane and rice.

Around of the city you will find numerous and wonderful archaeological monuments of the Mochica and Chimú cultures, outstanding Chan Chan's citadel.

Trujillo is known as the capital of la Marinera, and it celebrates during January a well attended National Festival. The city of Trujillo is home of the "paso horses" unique in the world and of its elegant horse-dealers with ponchos of linen and hay hats.

The Cathedral: It was built between 1647 and 1666, and rebuilt between 1768 to 1781. It have a beautiful decoration in its interior and colonial paintings. It has a Museum of Religious Art with exhibition of paintings and sculptures.

The Main Square: Like a traditional Spanish city, the Cathedral or Main Church, the City Hall.

Trujillo is known as “the city of eternal spring”. This always shines, filling with light even the most secluded comers in the capital of the department of La Libertad, brightening the friendly spirit of its people, who lives proud of its mud and adobe citadels built by the Chimus and Mochicas; its stately mansions, heritage of colonial times and beginnings of the Republic; and of ‘marinera’ , the national dance of Peru, a whirl of sensuality and gallantry from which love is born.
Yet the enchantment of Trujillo goes beyond its colonial past and slips into the pre-Hispanic period. In the Moche valley lies the city of Chan-Chan, capital of the Kingdom of the Great Chimu, considered to the largest city in the world to be built out of mud (covering an area over 20 square kilometers) ad only comparable to the archaeological remains of Teotihuacan in Mexico of the ancient cities of Egypt.
